Sovereignty Redefined: Citizenship Subjectivity and Freedom
Freedom and sovereignty are two pillars of democracy linking individuals and governments. How do movements that seek to alter political culture and institutions relate to radical notions of freedom? In what ways do subjectivities intersect with and redefine national and global sovereignty today? This panel will bring together three scholars whose work engages critically with historical and contemporary issues of citizenship, autonomy, and radical politics: classicist Stathis Gourgouris (Columbia University), political scientist Michael Hanchard (Johns Hopkins) and media scholar Helga Tawil-Souri (NYU). Join them for a public conversation about contemporary expressions of radical democracy in Greece, Latin America, and the Middle East. Bilge Yesil (Media Culture, College of Staten Island, CUNY) will serve as moderator.
